Finding a Springfield Groomer

I remember washing my big dogs in the bathtub at home. What a mess that was, not to mention my back would hurt from bending over and trying to keep them in the tub. Once I found the right groomer, I couldn’t imagine not having one. Finding the right groomer is not always a simple task. All groomers need proof of vaccines and most require the Bordetella vaccine. Prices for grooming vary and some groomers do not post prices, either because it’s based on the desired service or breed of pet.

A trip to the pet salon is like a trip to the spa. If your dog is social and enjoys getting out of the house, then taking them to the salon for the day is a great choice. Many groomers offer doggy daycare so the dogs can play and have fun while getting pampered.

Googling pet groomers in Springfield brings up a long list, so how do you know who to choose? Start by having an idea of what you want before you start your search. Does your pet simply need a bath to get the dirt off and get them smelling fresh, or do they need a haircut? Maybe your pet has skin allergies or other skin complications and you need to find a pet esthetician.

There are three big reasons to take your pet to a professional groomer:

  • Early detection. Every set of professional hands and eyes you have on your pet increases the likelihood of having something detected that you may miss. From fleas and eggs, skin concerns, new lumps and bumps, to issues with anal glands, ears, and teeth. A professional groomer can help in catching small concerns early.

  • More manageable coat. Brushing and washing regularly keeps smells, shedding, knots, and tangles all under control. Plus, who doesn’t love the smell and feel of a freshly groomed pet?

  • Better posture. This is one we typically don’t think about, but some breeds of dogs (dachshunds) are especially prone to bad posture from nails that go untrimmed. Trimmed nails also help keep arthritis and bone deformations from becoming major concerns. Tip: If your dog's nails touch the ground while they're standing, it’s probably time to get them trimmed.

When looking for a groomer, consider the following:

  • What kind of training and experience do they have? Different breeds require different grooming techniques. Additionally, every dog requires a unique approach. A professional groomer will be able to accommodate a wide range of scenarios, and will be open with you about what they’re comfortable handling. We always ask about how they handle dachshunds, because they’re prone to back injuries.

  • What kind of products do they use? Your pet may have allergies or reactions to products, or you may wish to use all natural/organic products. Talk with your groomer about the availability of these products and whether it’s an option to use.

  • How do they handle emergency situations? A professional groomer will have a plan to keep your pet safe in the event of a fire, tornado, hurricane, or winter weather. Additionally, they will have basic training in first aid and CPR in case something happens while being groomed. Additionally, they’ll have connections with a local veterinarian in the event of an emergency.
