Puppy Socialization
Getting a new puppy?
When getting a puppy the greatest time frame for learning starts at 3 weeks and ends between 16-20 weeks. This is time they can be exposed to an array of sights, sounds, and smells without becoming afraid. Puppies who don’t experience these sensations never learn to be comfortable around unfamiliar surroundings and may have aggressive tendencies. Proper socialization helps prevent fearful reactions to kids, or a new piece of furniture.
Socialization is so much more than just getting your dog to play with other dogs. The key here is exposure to novel situations in a safe manner. This includes having your dog experience visitors coming over to your home. You can sign up for age appropriate puppy training classes with a reputable trainer for great interaction time with other pups.
Behavioral issues are the number one cause of death for dogs. Socialization helps make your pup into a well-adjust and confident individual, making their time in public spaces and new scenarios much safer for them and you.
Here are some tips that may help you and your puppies.
Young puppies should be held and cuddled daily. Holding them in different positions, rub their paws, play with their mouth and ears.
Acclimate your puppy to all different sounds but try not to overwhelm. Radios, tvs cars, door knocking are all good ways to help acclimate and get them use to them.
Train you puppy to allow people to touch food bowls or chew toys. This help prevents foot guarding which makes dog anxious and stressed. You can walk up to food bowl while eating and drop treat and then walk away, this will get them excited about someone around while they eat or be comfortable with it.
Provide appropriate toys to help redirect biting. Making sudden noises when puppy bites you will startled them and they should stop and then associate noise with bad when they bite
Most importantly, when introducing all of these new experiences to your puppy, make sure they are getting an appropriate amount of treats and praise!
